Taiwan's Only University Directly Affiliated with the Holy See, Fu Jen's Deep International Influence
Despite its stellar reputation and a network of over 260,000 alumni worldwide, few recognize that Fu Jen is Taiwan's only comprehensive university directly under the Holy See. With a president appointed by the Vatican, Fu Jen enjoys diplomatic status and is one of Asia's top three Catholic universities. It is also a member of the International Federation of Catholic Universities (IFCU) under UNESCO, making it the only university in Taiwan to maintain long-term involvement with UNESCO. With extensive experience in international affairs, Fu Jen has established significant global influence.
"Fu Jen has done a lot, but has rarely spoken about it," says Professor Vincent Lai, who became Fu Jen's president in February this year. With over 30 years in Australian education and a successful tenure as Vice-Chancellor at Western Sydney University, where he led the university to the top of the global university impact rankings, Lai was deeply moved when he first saw Fu Jen's campus at night, with computer labs illuminated and students tutoring remote children via screens. "By sharing this, I hope to encourage more universities to exert positive social influence through higher education."
Fu Jen's Commitment to Holistic Education and Lifelong Learning
Fu Jen emphasizes holistic education and the meaning of life, with President Lai planning to use the medical school as a central platform. This platform will allow students from all 12 colleges to serve the community through their professional skills, fostering an understanding of life's value. The goal is to establish Fu Jen as a "Third Life University," catering to lifelong learning needs for the elderly and promoting intergenerational learning and creation.
